After breakfast, your guide and driver collect you for a morning of discovery in Casablanca. The centrepiece is the awe-inspiring Hassan II Mosque — the second largest mosque in Africa and seventh in the world, with the tallest minaret on earth soaring 210 metres above the Atlantic, its laser beam directed nightly towards Mecca. A masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship, it is simply breathtaking. Explore the charming Habous district, where French planning meets traditional Moroccan design in a fascinating architectural blend. After lunch, head north to Rabat for an orientation tour taking in the Royal Palace, the Mohamed V Mausoleum, the Hassan Tower, the Kasbah des Oudayas and the Chellah necropolis. After breakfast, depart for Meknes — the great Ismaili imperial capital enclosed by a staggering 40 kilometres of monumental earthen walls. Visit the triumphant Bab Mansour gate, widely regarded as the finest ceremonial gate in Morocco, the vast royal stables that once housed 12,000 horses, and the historic Jewish mellah quarter. Continue to the magnificent Roman ruins of Volubilis — one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where extraordinary floor mosaics and ancient columns rise dramatically from the open Moroccan plain. After breakfast, depart Fez and head south towards Marrakech via one of Morocco's most scenic and least expected routes. The road winds through Immouzer Kandar — a tranquil Berber village nestled among apple orchards and cedar forests — before arriving in Ifrane, the remarkable Middle Atlas town known as the Switzerland of Morocco for its Alpine-style chalets, snow-dusted ski slopes and immaculately kept gardens. The contrast with the ancient medinas left behind is extraordinary and delightful. The morning takes in the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, the tranquil Ménara Gardens, the haunting Saadian Tombs — sealed and forgotten for centuries before their rediscovery in 1917 — and the lavish Bahia Palace, constructed to be the grandest palace of its era.
