After breakfast, your guide and driver collect you for a morning of discovery in Casablanca. The centrepiece is the magnificent Hassan II Mosque — the second largest mosque in Africa and seventh in the world, with the tallest minaret on earth rising 210 metres above the Atlantic, its laser beam directed nightly towards Mecca. A masterwork of modern Moroccan craftsmanship, it demands time and close attention. Continue to the charming Habous district, where French colonial planning meets traditional Moroccan design in a fascinating blend unique to Casablanca. After lunch at a local restaurant, head north to Rabat for an orientation tour covering the Royal Palace, Mohamed V Mausoleum, Hassan Tower, Kasbah des Oudayas, Chellah and the medina souks.

After breakfast, depart for Meknes — the great Ismaili imperial capital encircled by a staggering 40 kilometres of monumental earthen walls. Visit the triumphant Bab Mansour gate, widely considered the finest ceremonial gateway in Morocco, the immense royal stables that once housed 12,000 horses, and the historic Jewish mellah quarter. From there, continue to the extraordinary Roman ruins of Volubilis — one of the finest preserved Roman sites in all of Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where remarkable floor mosaics and towering columns rise from the open plain in astonishing condition. The scale of what has survived two millennia is humbling. Press on east to Fez, check in and enjoy dinner.

Begin in the breathtaking medina, founded in the 8th century, where the ancient Andalusian Mosque and the Al-Quaraouiyine University — the oldest continuously operating university in the world — sit alongside ornate madrasas and the celebrated Nejjarine fountain. After breakfast, depart Fez and head south towards Marrakech via one of Morocco's most scenic and surprising routes. The road winds through Immouzer Kandar — a charming Berber village set among apple orchards and cedar forests — before arriving in Ifrane, the remarkable Middle Atlas town famously known as the Switzerland of Morocco for its Alpine-style chalets, manicured gardens and ski slopes. The contrast with the ancient walled medinas of the previous two days is genuinely startling and one of the great pleasures of travelling through Morocco's interior. Continue south as the landscape gradually warms and opens towards Marrakech, stopping for lunch en route. Arrive in the Pink City in the late afternoon.
